Caxton book a collection of essays poems tales and sketches W H 18221876 Rhodes 9781175912206 Books

This entertaining collection of short stories and poems includes the best work of William Henry Rhodes, who moved to California during the gold rush. A practicing lawyer who attended Princeton and Harvard Law School, Rhodes wrote and read his poetry in the time left over, using the pen name, Caxton. During his 26 years in California, he lived on Oroville, Marysville, Sacrameno and San Francisco.

Before he died at 54 of kidney disease in 1876, he was sometimes mentioned in the same breath with Mark Twain and Bret Harte, as among the best chroniclers of California during the same era. He also was a founding member of the Bohemian Club in San Francisco, where his creative efforts were celebrated.

The Case of Summerfield, a sci-fi thriller, and Lost and Found, a poetic celebration of California as the culmination of western civilization, both included here, are especially worth reading.
